Rambling Rector

Just one photograph this week. This is not a post about some reverend gentleman who has strayed from the path of righteousness. It is about the white rambling rose that rambles freely through the cherry tree in front of our house. In fact, its the only reason that the cherry has survived. I parked my car under the tree to give you an idea of its size.

Glyn> are you speaking to some kind of symbiotic relationship between the two plants; that absent the white rambling rose the cherry tree would have died? In the alternative, are you saying that absent the white rambling rose that rambles freely through your cherry tree that you would chop down the cherry tree? Maybe there's another explaination?

anon - I don't much like ornamental cherries and it would have been chopped down. As it happens, the cherry has become valuable for a second reason, in that there are now three bird feeders hanging from it, and it has become a regular haunt of greater spotted woodpeckers

So it is a 'sort of'/'also ran' symbiotic relationship. The cherry tree provides a rambling surface for the rambling rose to grow and the rambling rose discourages you from chopping down the ornamental cherries thereby saving the life of the cherry tree.

Christopher - Indeed. If the Rector dies, the Cherry gets the chop.

I suppose you should avoid the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC. It's HUGE - maybe hundreds of thousands come to see the Cherry trees blossom. DC gets crazy when those trees blossom! This year's one is long gone, but next year ... oh wow ... will be the often heard cry.

DC its metro area is so full of trees that electrical outages are not uncommon in stormy weather - trees too close to power cables can set off a chain reaction. Talking about chain reactions ... there's a lot of talk in DC about an attack on Iran's nuclear stuff. It seems Israel is so nervous about what the next president will do about Iran that Israel may decide to set the scene before the next President takes up office.
