Why was Gordon Brown there?
Have you ever seen anyone look so out of place as Gordon Brown last night, shaking hands with all the players after the World Cup Final. He must have been gutted that he was not able to use national sporting success to restore his smashed image in the way that Mbeki so blatantly did - and he's no Nelson Mandela. I wonder what he was saying to the players. Johnny Wilkinson walked straight past him as if he wasn't there. Someone should ask Johnny if he wants to stand as a Conservative candidate somewhere. Anyway, it was the England team. Gordon Brown is Scottish and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He wouldn't have been there if it had been Wales in the final. What the hell was he doing there?

I'm commenting where I disagree, so I thought it would only be fair to find a comment where I agree, as well...;-)
I'm hoping it will have been so obviously self-serving that (quite apart from the not-to-plan association with failure) it will register with people that we have another Tony Blair on our hands. A fair bit more dour, granted, but just as willing to spin.
It certainly turned my stomach. Events like this need to be free from media-hungry bandwagon jumpers.
Gordon Brown is Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the last time I checked England is part of the United Kingdom.
wouldn't have been there if it had been Wales in the final.
What evidence do you have for that? Of course he would, and so would Cameron if he ever became PM. (i) It would be expected and (ii) A politician wouldn't miss their chance to try and get associated with anything that looks successful.
aran - don't seem to be apologetic for disagreeing. I would be upset if no-one disagreed. Unfortunately no time tonight to persue the drug legalisation issue. In part, I post on things where I expect disagreement. I did think that GB looked like a fish out of water.
Left field - I suppose you have a point - but he did look ridiculous, as did the French President. If it had been Wales it would have been one of the two Rhodris. Scotland and it would have been Alex Salmond. Personally, I would prefer if the politicians attend but leave the royalty or representatives of the relevent spoting bodies.it was left with
Bring back Tony, at least we won the Ashes, Rugby world cup, England football qualifing for touraments, Wales winning the Grandslam etc. Gordon has the midas touch in reverse, the country can't afford to have him in office much longer.
You're wrong Glyn. If Wales had been in the final Rhodri Morgan might have been in the ground. He would not have been on the podium at the prsentation. Scotland and Wales have regional governments. The equivalent to Wales in Germany is Baden-Wuttemburg. If you want any First Minister on the podium in any future rugby world cup then you vote for independence. Although on second thoughts the chances of Wales winning the rugby world cup are as slim as Lembit Opik returning to Krypton.
If it had been Wales it would have been one of the two Rhodris. Scotland and it would have been Alex Salmond.
You have nailed the essential point. There is no First Minister for England, so I guess the PM is the next logical choice.
Personally, I would prefer if the politicians attend but leave the royalty or representatives of the relevant sporting bodies.
I couldn't agree more.
Just proves how desperate for votes Brown is.
anon - I hope it doesn't mean that Calzaghe will lose to Kessler. That would the strongest argument ever for Welsh independence!
mountjoy - the problem for Gordon Brown is that the harder he tries to spin it, the worse it seems to be for him.
