What do you think of this?

Not sensible for me to comment on the way that my party has chosen its candidates for next years elections to the European Parliament - so I won't. But I will post what Tim Montgomery has to say about it on ConservativeHome, just in case any of you read my site but not his. Please feel free to tell me what you think, but don't expect to receive a full response.

No surprises there then ... it seems the fixes are in on the 'MEP selection process'. How (not) to have a democratic process. I am puzzled y my fellow Europeans think they have a democratic EU. The more remote the EU politicians get, the more the national electorates feel they are far removed from the EU political process ... the more contempt there will be for the European 'democratic' process and the more apathy that will breed and finally a lot of people will switch off and even begin to think that they don't really matter and we will have a nation called Britain full of people who don't feel like they belong to any nation and we will have a society ill at ease with itself. Oh, hang on, that's where the UK is right now, silly me. Silly me.

I really don't understand all of this. The Tories have a Herefordshire county councillor with it seems hardly any connection with Wales topping the list not because party members voted for her but because she is a woman. The person the party members wanted to be top of the list is second because he is man. This is bizarre. Even Stalin would not have rigged elections in this way.

Anon: As the man in question, I should say that the results were very close. As to the rules, I knew that this rule was in place at the time, as did everyone else who took part ... and the rule was set out in documents available party members before the ballott and others interested - even on ConservativeHome.

I have set out my views of what was wrong with the process on my own blog; and in comments on ConservativeHome I have set out my understanding of the party's reasons for this rule.

The criticism has been made ... now let's concentrate on the important things: winning seats in the local elections and winning a second seat in the European Parliament - and for those that think I am some Europhile 'yes-man', be prepared for a shock!

Glyn: when can I come to help you and your association? Please contact me through my blog or website (http://www.evanprice.co.uk).

I've no idea what the voting was, and I don't want to know - and I'm not going to comment on it either. Evan has got it right. We knew what the voting system was going to be and everyone put their names forwards on that basis. Task we have now is to go form the second seat from Wales.

And I've had second thoughts about leaving snide little anonomous comments on my blog without any reference whatsoever to opinion - so I'm just going to delete them, and not publish them in future.
