Home support evaporates.

I don't take a lot of interest in what my political opposition in Montgomeryshire is up to, but every Parliamentary candidate has to keep at least half an eye on the other side. In my case this involves noting the campaigning strategy of the MP for Montgomeryshire.

I must admit that I'd assumed he would win the contest to become President of the Liberal Democrat Party when Simon Hughes' term is up. I'd factored in the added publicity this would generate. I know, I know. He was totally hammered the last time he stood. But then he was up against a 'big name' - well 'big' in Lib Dem terms anyway. This time his only anticipated opponent is the little known Baroness Ros Scott, about whom my investigations have revealed nothing but good reports. Hmmm, perhaps its not going to be the shoe-in for Lembit Opik that he was expecting - if this is typical of sentiment in the party. Its never a good sign when 'home' support evaporates.

He will loose the presidency to a very worthy lady. She commands respect. Now when did the celebrity loving comedian, who masquerades as the part-time MP for Montgomeryshire, last earn anyone's respect?? One wonders what it takes for him to wake up. He's in denial about so many things......Maybe losing his seat to you Glyn will do it?

anon - cannot express a view on this as I don't know her. But from what I hear, Ros Scott has become the favorite to win. Impressive lin-up of declared support on her website.

Ros Scott will win because she is everything the Opik is not. Even the Lib Dems would not be stupid enough to make him their President

I'm afraid Lembit has almost certainly lost the respect of a lot of his colleagues, his love of celebrity will be his downfall. Look at his nonsense over the last few days with that 2 wheeled thingy he's been poncing around on in London and in Newtown - why can't he just ride a bike? Surely there is something else far more important than that he can get his teeth into? Trouble is - he'll do anything for publicity. He's lost the respect of his constituents as well as his colleagues, and I for one, will be glad to see the back of him as he has become such an embarrassment.

Sadly the Libe Dems ARE stupid enough to make Lembit Opik president!
