Kidney Dialysis Unit arrives
This may look like an ugly utilitarian prefabricated building of no architectural worth - and I suppose it is. But I think its one of the most beautiful structures that I have ever seen. Its the temporary demountable kidney dialysis unit which was delivered to Welshpool's Victoria Memorial Hospital over the weekend. For such a long time the good people of Montgomeryshire have waited. It will be located in the Hospital car park, which was once the site of the maternity unit at which I was born. I understand that it should be in operation in less than two months time. Poignantly, next weekend, I will be reading at the funeral service of one of those who would probably have been a regular user. Now we have to push on with the permanent unit which it's hoped will be opened in 2012.

Finally! and friends say it's been brilliant in Tremadog (Ysbyty Alltwen), where some had to travel 2hrs before to get to the nearest one.
However, I've always wondered with the NHS, when things are built/placed why does it take so long to set up. Really, Glyn out of curiosity what the hell is going to happen in the next 2months!?.s
I think its hoped it might be less than two months, but there is the matter of appointing staff and attaching the services. But in general, I agree with you about the time these things take. I do feel that after waiting 20 years (or whatever) the two months seems like nothing.
Anon, the dialysis machines are coming from Germany, and once here have to be commissioned, this takes about a month per machine (simultaneously) to check all is well - the built in water treatment unit, the back up battery is powered up correctly to provide power in the event of a cut for 4 hours dialysis (average requiremnt) and that they basically work properly on the various dialysisng systems it runs (there are different forms of dailsyis which is too long winded for here), then staff and machines are familiarised (the machines are the next generation Fresaneous that Wrexham and Shrewsbury are using) so staff need to familarise themselves with the new nuances of them .....plus the stock etc to run the unit...theres an awful lot to do in 8 weeks, I hope they manage to do it...
