My Macavity MP

Sorry if this post seems a bit partisan, but been out campaigning with Frank Torrens tonight. All very odd. Frank is standing as a Conservative candidate for election to Powys County Council in Newtown. His opponent is Richard Noyce, who is standing as a Liberal Democrat. Its a straight political fight between the Lib Dem incumbant and a Conservative challenger. One of the houses we called at gave us one of Richard's campaign leaflets. It carried a nice photo of him. I've posted before about the almost total absence of Montgomeryshire's Liberal Democrat MP, Lembit Opik from any of the Lib Dem campaigning material being used in next week's local election. Sure enough. The leaflet was plastered in endorsement by Alex Carlile, who was Montgomeryshire's local MP until 1997 - but not a glimpse of Macavity. Its clear that Montgomeryshire Lib Dem Council candidates have decided that their only chance of success next week is if they dissociate themselves completely from their own MP. This must be unprecedented. And Frank is a very good candidate who would be a committed Councillor if he were to be elected.

At least the Lib Dems, for once, are doing the right thing in keeping Lembit Opik off their literature. The puzzling thing is the fact they re-selected him in the first place. Running with Grope-it means a real possibility of losing that seat. And they know it.

Oh stop being so cheeky about Mr Opik ...

Grope-it? I like that!

Yes, the LibDems seem to be in a bit of a tail-spin and imploding. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people if I am honest. Let us hope the voters make the Right choice!

anon, unixman and Roman - I hope this won't seem unfair to him, but I hope he does lose his seat!

Given his propensity for self-publicity I would rate him as a politician who deserves to be beaten.. esp by you!

I'm not a bit surprised that they want to disassociate themselves from the walking disaster that Lembit is turning out to be. I agree with unixman - if Lembit stands at the next general election - he will undoubtedly lose his seat to you. He is much more of a buffoon than Mick Bates could ever be.

Frankie - and Mick has won the Assembly's 'Buffoon of the Year' title so often that it must almost be his to keep

shame the election isn't a bit more about frank and richard and not the parties or who or who hasn't edorsed them. should be more about the quality of the individual to best represent the constituents. its a farce when they need endorsing by anyone.
Stand as you Glyn against LO, I can't think of any conservative endorsemnet taht would help you win my vote.

eric - I'm with you on this, but the Council has gone political and we were obliged to respond. We have put forward 9 candidates in Montgomeryshire and I hope we finish up with a decent sized group. I have endorsed them on their leaflets and I'm campaigning with them most days. we are trying to build a team across all levels of government.
